Roberts Sworn in as Chief Justice

John Roberts was sworn in as the 17th Chief Justice of the United States today.

He replaces William Renquist, who died earlier this month.

Roberts was originally nominated to fill the place of Sandra Day O’Conner, who announced her resignation recently, but President Bush was quick to re-nominate him for Chief Justice.

Roberts was voted by the senate 77-22. 55 republicans voted for him and 22 democrats as well, although he was rejected by 22 democrats.

This vote allows for one additional nomination by George W Bush this month.

Roberts was principal deputy solicitor general, speaking for George H W Bush’s administration before the high courts 12 years ago.
